Band O' The Week: Eons

Eons are forthright from the start—“it’s a wonder we get anything done.” This, of course, is not due to lethargy (far from it, as just one listen will demonstrate), but rather, geographic constraints. The members of this inventive outfit are spread out from Richmond to Chicago and even Detroit. However, once one begins to listen to the demos they have posted online, it becomes evident that distance is no obstacle for the band.

So, what is it about Eons that is so exemplary? I suppose that is the point of any “good” review—to compel the reader to listen to a certain group or piece of music. This is potentially a win/win/win situation. The artist will hopefully receive the credit and accolades they deserve. The listener will find music that is actually worth listening to. And, finally, if the reviewer can influence enough people, he or she propagates his or her own agenda—which most likely includes being surrounded by people who also listen to “good” music—thereby, combating the sub-par.

Well, I’m happy to report that Eons is more than just “good” music. Getting back to the question posed way up in the beginning of the second paragraph, Eons have a very special talent. They are truly one of few bands that are able to legitimately blend all of their influences into a unique and cohesive sound. From “Getchya Guitar On” to “Pulses Pins and Needles”, it’s easy to grab onto bits of sound that seem familiar, yet the songs possess an originality you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The fuzzy bass lines would be enough to reel you in. Match this with sensible drumming, countless guitar hooks, and vocal melodies that you’ll be singing for days on end, and you’ve got Eons. This, of course, is to say nothing of the samples and synth elements that work to add further texture. At the core, these songs are well-constructed and infused with melody—what’s not to love?

With upcoming shows throughout the Midwest, and a full-length album on its way, Eons are gearing up for a very prolific year. In an effort to combat the sub-par, while at the same time gaining appreciation for compelling talent, go hear it for yourself—they’ll remind you of what’s really worth listening to.
